In most instances, you need to travel to the world to truly experience different cultures but at the Chhaya wedding, photographer Sara Keefe had the privilege of photographing a wedding that blended three distinct cultures into one beautiful day.

The Bride, Lynna, being of Vietnamese descent, and the Groom, Tejas, of Indian, each grew up with traditions that were unique to their specific backgrounds. With weddings holding a significant place in both cultures, the happy couple decided to celebrate their marriage and their traditions by first hosting a traditional Vietnamese wedding, followed by a traditional Indian wedding.

The importance of culture is that it ties us to our roots, so it was only fitting that the bride and groom gave special heed to include their families, especially their parents, in the day’s festivities. “I loved that they did all of these ceremonies and long days of planning to show respect to both of their cultures and families equally. It was so clear that the wishes of their families were very important to them.”

Being a part of an Indian wedding ceremony for the first time, Sara Keefe, had plenty of opportunities to capture photos from a new perspective, but one of her favorite events to photograph that day was prior to the bride and groom even meeting. “I loved the Baraat, which is a ceremony dedicated to the groom’s wedding procession, traveling to meet his bride.  Anytime the day starts with dancing, I’m in!”

Having time to reflect on the memories and the photos of Lynna and Tejas’s wedding day, Sara Keefe found that sharing in the various cultures of this special event helped her have a deeper respect for her own culture. “My favorite part of the experience was learning all the beautiful traditions of Indian culture.  It really helped me reflect on my own wedding traditions and remember the importance they play in our weddings.”
